Overview

Malaysia will face Belgium in a must-win clash of 2016 Junior Hockey World Cup in North Indian city of Lucknow on 12 December.

The Southeast Asian team opened their account in the ongoing tournament following their 2-0 win over Egypt on Sunday. Mohamad Zulhamizan and Khaliq Hamrin scored on either side of the break to give Malaysia three points in their second group game.

Malaysia are now placed third in Pool B with three points from two games with a loss and a win. Notably, Wallace Tan's team lost their opening encounter to group heavyweights Netherlands 7-2 on 9 December with Muhd Hafizuddin Zaidi and Amirol Aideed Arshad scoring the consolation goals.

With a goal difference of -3, Malaysia find themselves in a tricky position as even a win against group leaders Belgium might not guarantee them of a place in the quarter-final as both the group leaders and the Netherlands, who are expected to win their Monday's game against minnows Egypt, have better goal differences than Malaysia - 5 and 4, respectively.

On the other hand, Belgium have so far had a comfortable campaign in the ongoing tournament. They crushed Egypt 4-0 in their opener and pipped the Netherlands in a tightly-fought contest, which saw Henri Raes sealing the game for them with a late winner. Notably, the European giants have had six different men scoring for them so far.
