Magnitude 5.8 earthquake strikes off Taiwan's Yilan county

Local media say one person in Taipei was injured a tile that fell off a building hit him.

A magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck off the coast of Taiwan's northeastern Yilan county, shaking buildings in the capital Taipei.

Taiwan's central weather bureau said the quake struck at 11:17 am at a depth of 17.5 kilometers.

The tremor lasted for about 100 seconds, Bloomberg reported, citing local broadcaster Sanlih Television.

The weather bureau said two aftershocks followed the initial tremor. Local media said one person in Taipei was injured a tile that fell off a building hit him.

No tsunami warnings were issued after the earthquake.

Taiwan, which lies on the seismically active "ring of fire", experiences moderate to strong earthquakes.

In February, a 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck southwest Taiwan, killing 117 people and toppling a high rise residential building.
