Indonesia: Road accident claims 16 lives in Java

Batang Police and Central Java Police conducted an investigation and concluded that a flat tyre was the primary cause of the accident.

At least 16 people were killed and several got injured in a road accident involving a pickup truck in Kebaron Village in Central Java on Monday.

The Mitsubishi L300 pickup truck rolled down a steep road after losing balance due to a punctured tyre, said police.

According to the Jakarta Post, Batang Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Joko Setiono said, "When the vehicle was speeding on the steep road in Kebaron, the right back tire burst. The truck veered to the left and hit the cliff on that side of the road. Then the truck leaned to the right and rolled into the plantation on the right side of the road."

The 53-year-old driver, identified as Samaan, was taking Bentul villagers to attend a funeral in a village called Amongrogo. The passengers were flung out of the vehicle when it crashed into the cliff. More people lost lives when the vehicle rolled down the slope, reported the news agency.

The victims were taken immediately to nearby hospitals and local health clinics. The dead bodies were handed over to their respective families for performing the last rites. The Batang administration came forward to support the victim and announced Rp 1 million (US$76) in assistance to the grieving families.
