It is festive season for the Indian people, and the followers of Hindu faith in broader Asia, with the Diwali or Deepavali celebration slated to take place next week. The festival symbolizing the victory of righteousness and the lifting of spiritual darkness is perhaps the biigest national festival in India.

People in different regions in India and in countries like Malaysia and Singapore celebrate Diwali on various dates as the traditional lunar calendar can be interpreted in different ways.

The word "Deepawali" refers to rows of diyas, or clay lamps. This festival commemorates Lord Rama's return to the kingdom of Ayodhya after completing his 14-year exile.

Goddess Kali, who was Lord Shiva's consort, is worshipped during Diwali festival. Some people also worship Goddess Laxmi as she symbolizes wealth and prosperity.
