At least nine people were killed and several were injured after an operation platform collapsed at a power plant in China on Saturday morning, the official Xinhua news agency reported.

Xinhua cited sources with the local government and said the accident, in the southern province of Guangdong, happened at the No. 7 Thermal Power Plant in the provincial capital, Guangzhou. The plant is still under construction.

The authorities said that the government has launched an investigation.

China continues to suffer from frequent deadly industrial accidents despite a central government-ordered drive to upgrade safety in factories, power plants and mines. These series of incidents have raised questions about the country's safety standards.
