Fourth seed Jonathan Christie faces unseeded Malaysian shuttler Soong Joo Ven in the Men's singles semi-final of 2017 Thailand Open on Saturday.

Christie, the world number 27, decimated France's Brice Leverdez 21-15, 21-19 in straight games in his quarter-final outing yesterday. On the other hand, world number 94 Joo Ven continued his brilliant run in the ongoing tournament with a straight games win over higher-ranked Hong Kong shuttler Lee Cheuk Yiu.

While 2016 Malaysia Superseries Premier semi-finalist Christie will start as the favourite, Joo Ven cannot be counted out after his stunning R16 win over world number 19 Marc Zwiebler on Thursday. The 22-year-old Malaysian needed only 33 minutes to outclass the German 22-20, 21-19, which has reportedly got him "fired up" for the remainder of the tournament.

Joo Ven looked looked solid and was in complete control against his semi-final opponent Cheuk Yiu yesterday. Despite the good run, the Malaysian shuttler conceded that there is a lot of work that needs to be done before he starts celebrating. Against, Christie, he has to punch above his weight to stand a chance of causing another upset.

The Indonesian teenager has not lost a game yet in the ongoing tournament. While Christie had a breakthrough year in 2016, he has continued his impressive run in the ongoing year as well with wins over top-10 players of the likes of Son Wan Ho (Singapore Open R2) and Chou Tien Chen (Malaysia Superseries Premier R2).
