Overview

It is time for a high-octane Melbourne Derby on the New Year's day as the Renegades and Stars go head-to-head in-front of a possible packed house at the MCG.

Sunday's tie will just be the second match of the 2016/17 campaign for David Hussey's men but they have already shown what they are capable of by decimating Hobart Hurricanes on the road on 26 December. After losing the toss, the Stars conceded 188 runs after Tim Paine and George Bailey took the attack to Ben Hilfenhaus and Co.

James Faulkner, Marcus Stoinis, Scott Boland and Adam Zampa struggled with the ball on a belter of a surface at the Bellerive Oval but the Stars were rescued by their top-order consisting of Rob Quiney (43-ball 75), Luke Wright (29-ball 45) and Glenn Maxwell, who finished things off with a 29-ball 58.

Stars already have an all-round squad filled with superstars and England all-rounder Kevin Pietersen is set to join them for the big game and add to the firepower.

On the other hand, Renegades lost a close battle against the Perth Scorchers on Thursday right after their star all-rounder Dwayne Bravo was stretchered off the field with a hamstring injury. Captain Aaron Finch bowled the final over, in which nine was needed, instead of the West Indies all-rounder and almost did the job for his team.

The Renegades have now lost one and won one as they head into the season's first Melbourne derby. They suffered a big blow when it was revealed that Bravo would miss the rest of the tournament as well. A lot on Saturday will depend on their seasoned campaigners Brad Hogg and Sunil Narine to keep the Stars quiet and give their team an opportunity to make merry at home.
