One woman was killed when a white supremacist drove his car into a group of protesters. At least 19 others were injured in the incident during a protest against a large white supremacist rally. 20-year-old James Fields was arrested after fleeing the scene. He was charged with second degree murder, three counts of malicious wounding and failing to stop at an accident. The crash followed hours of violent clashes between white supremacists and counter-protesters. President Donald Trump was criticised for not directly denounce the violent far-right demonstrators. The white supremacists had gathered in Charlottesville to protest the removal of a Confederate generals statue.
