This video from Galveston Island, Texas, on June 21 shows a colony of fire ants clumping together to create a living raft in the floodwaters brought on by Tropical Storm Cindy as it drew closer to landfall. When faced with an influx of water to their colony, fire ants will gather together to protect the most vulnerable in their ranks and create a living raft until they find dry land. According to biologists, the ants cannot drown in water and will swarm any solid object they find in the water, including paddles, arms and shoes.
