2 SMRT maintenance staff killed in accident on track near Pasir station

Both the workers were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

Two maintenance workers at the Singapore Mass Rapid Transit (SMRT) died in an accident near Pasir Ris station, authorities said on Tuesday.

The incident occurred at about 11 in the morning. Patrick Nathan, SMRT Vice-President for Corporate Information and Communications, said a detailed police investigation into the accident is taking place.

"At around 11.10am today, there was an accident involving two SMRT maintenance staff along the track at a servicing point near Pasir Ris station," Nathan said in a statement.

He said the SCDF was immediately activated. "We are working with the Police to conduct a detailed investigation into this accident."

Both the workers were pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. The accident took place at one of the tracks, local media reports said.

Though SMRT initially said the train services will resume at 12.15pm, it later advised commuters that services will be delayed further.

"We convey our deepest condolences to their families and will be providing support to them at this very difficult time," said Nathan.
