A 21-year-old motorcyclist died after a serious multi-vehicle accident along the Ayer Rajah Expressway (AYE) towards Tuas on Tuesday evening, March 31.

The accident, which occurred shortly after the South Buona Vista Road exit at around 6.45 pm, involved a motorcycle and three cars.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) arrived at the scene and conveyed both the rider and his pillion passenger to the hospital. While the 19-year-old female pillion rider was conscious when taken for treatment, the motorcyclist later succumbed to his injuries.

Footage circulating online captured the aftermath of the crash, showing debris scattered across multiple lanes of the expressway, believed to be from the motorcycle. Several police vehicles, along with the Expressway Monitoring and Advisory System (EMAS) recovery team, were deployed to manage the situation and clear the wreckage.

The incident led to significant disruption along the expressway, with multiple lanes temporarily closed. The authorities initially advised motorists to avoid lanes 2 and 3, before extending the advisory to lane 1 as well as the situation unfolded. Traffic quickly built up, stretching as far back as Lower Delta Road, turning the evening commute into a prolonged ordeal for many drivers.

Public transport services were also affected. Tower Transit Singapore noted delays in bus services 97 and 963, while SBS Transit later reported disruptions to services 14, 33, 166, 197 and 198. At one point, services 197 and 198 were diverted, skipping several stops near the accident site. However, normal operations for all affected services gradually resumed by around 11.15 pm.

The investigations into the cause of the accident are still ongoing.
