Overview

Roger Federer revealed he feels positive about his game after surviving a five-set marathon Round of 16 clash against sixth seed Kei Nishikori at the Rod Laver Arena on Sunday.

The 17th seed, who had eased past his opponents in his first three rounds, was tested in his fourth by the Japanese player, who took the first set 7-6. However, the 17-time Grand Slam champion was quick to buckle up and take the match 6-7, 6-4, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3. Hopes of Federer winning the title at Melbourne were fuelled when the 35-year-old demolished 10th seed Tomas Berdych in straight sets on Friday.

While he has avoided a face-off in the quarter-final against Andy Murray, the early exits of the Brit and second seed Novak Djokovic has surprised Federer. Also, the 35-year-old reportedly said he is up for more five-setters and that he is looking good to go the distance in Melbourne this year.

While beating Nishikori was the first major step towards his fifth Australian Open title, Federer will face a tricky test on Tuesday against Alexander Zverev, who demolished top seed Murray in four sets on Sunday.

The 29-year-old German, cheered on by his younger brother Alexander after his defeat to Rafael Nadal in the third round, made light work of Murray with his effective serve and volley combination. Having lost key years of his career after a series of injuries since 2009, Mischa has entered his first Grand Slam quarter-final shortly after regaining a spot in the top 100 in 2016.

The world number 50 will be inspired after his victory over the world number one but he still has an uphill task against Federer, who has been showing glimpses of his vintage self in the last few days at the Melbourne Park.
