Overview

Group H spot of the main draw in the 2017 AFC Cup is for the taking as both Home United and Phnom Penh Crown FC (PPC) play the first of the two-legged tie in Cambodia on Monday.

The Protectors have undergone quite a lot of changes since their fourth-place finish last season. National goalkeeper Hassan Sunny, who returned from Thailand's Army United, along with defender Afiq Younis will be key members of their backline, which suffered last season after conceding second most number of goals (42) among the nine teams in the league.

Also, Aidil Sharin's team will have the services of striker Stipe Plazibat, who scored 15 goals in his debut S.League season with Hougang in 2016 and the Croatian should get enough support from the likes of midfielders Adam Swandi, Izzdin Shafiq and Chris van Huizen.

Home also travelled to Thailand for a 10-day pre-season tour to get the new squad up and running. Despite facing defeats to Thai heavyweights Pattaya United and Muangthong United, the Protectors would have come home with valuable exposure, which should get them ready for the first big game of the season on Monday.

On the other hand, PPC, who are among the most successful Cambodian sides with six C-League titles, finished fifth in 2016 edition of the league after losing some of their key players. However, they have also added firepower to their squad by securing the likes of Japanese duo Futa Nakamura and Chiharu Kosuge along with Ukrainian attacking midfielder Volodymyr Ordynskyi.

While PPC will be looking to make use of the home advantage, Home have it in them to clinch an away win and strengthen their chances of joining Tampines Rovers as Singapore's second representative at the AFC Cup. However, a lot will depend on how well the new-look unit combines and performs under pressure.
