Novak Djokovic faces Nick Kyrgios in the quarter-final of the ongoing ATP Mexican Open in Acapulco on Thursday (Friday morning, Singapore time).
The top seed survived a marathon battle against Juan Martin Del Potro in his second round match yesterday. After conceding the first set 4-6, the world number two fought back to win the second 6-4 but the Argentine broke early in the third set. However, the Serb held his nerve to break back and win the decider 6-4.
Djokovic was notably the only top-10 player to feature in the Davis Cup World Group opening round. The Serb, right after his shock second-round exit at the Australian Open, featured in Serbia's 3-1 win over Russia earlier this month.
Heading into the ongoing tournament with a win under his belt, Djokovic opened the campaign by decimating Martin Klizan 6-3, 7-6. The focus will be on the top seed in today's quarter-final clash as quite a lot will depend on his ability to beat fatigue as he plays later today, right after a tough fight, in which he was pushed to the limits by Del Potro.
Djokovic though is reportedly hopeful that he "will try to recover and get into shape" in time for his meeting against Kyrgios, whom he has not faced in the past. Notably, the Australian youngster defeated American player Donald Young 6-2, 6-4 yesterday to clinch his last-eight berth.
Having faced early exits in Melbourne and a semi-final loss in Marseille last month, Kyrgios faces an uphill task against Djokovic, who is keen on making amends for his disappointment in Melbourne.
