More than a week ago, Microsoft launched the Surface Laptop as a rival of Google's Chromebook and Apple's MacBook Air. The device sports a 13.5-inch PixelSense display with a seventh-generation Intel Core i5 and i7.

Alcantara fabric

The Alcantara fabric that Microsoft used to wrap the keys and covers get all of the rave attention among tech analysts.

The Verge calls this "one design element that's not conservative at all". When the Surface Laptop was first launched, Microsoft reassures the public that Alcantara "ages beautifully, growing richer and darker over time, and is wonderfully soft to touch".

"In fact, every person who has seen this laptop asks about it first. Most think it feels nice," states The Verge. This particular design, on the other hand, gets a derisive judgment as "it will wear down after months and years of use". This must be what Microsoft warned right at the onset to treat this device as a luxury product.

Windows 10

ZDNet, for the most part, is not favorable of Windows 10 S as it only accommodates Microsoft's software and apps. It is confined to apps that are preloaded and those that are only available to download and install via Windows 10 Store. This is primarily due to Microsoft's venture to strengthen security in the device.

"For those like me who have few app needs and/or who can use browser-based versions of oft-used apps like Google Maps and Google Search, the Surface Laptop isn't a hindrance", states ZDNet. Nevertheless, users who bought Surface Laptop for more than US$800 are privileged to upgrade Windows 10 S to Windows 10 Pro for free.

While the Business Insider calls this Windows 10 S limitation "frustrating", it stresses out that Microsoft is targeting this flagship operating system chiefly for students. The publication makes mention that Windows 10 S has Minecraft and Roblox.

Great looks, solid performance

Laptop Mag hail Surface Laptop as "one of the sexiest laptops ever" for its "great looks with solid performance, long battery life and a top-notch typing experience".

"When you look at the landscape of ultraportable laptops, there's a race to be the thinnest on the block, but we're starting to see diminishing returns as a result of that quest", states Laptop Mag. "The Surface Laptop stands out with a design that dares to be different, and it pays off".

Microsoft Surface Laptop will finally be released on 15 June for US$999.
