Overview

India take on South Korea in the semi-final of 2016 Asian Hockey Champions Trophy at the Wisma Belia Hockey Stadium in Malaysia on 29 October.

South Korea settled for a fourth-place finish after playing out a 1-1 draw with hosts Malaysia on the final day of the round-robin clash. Jeong Jun-Woo scored the opening goal on Thursday and his side was looking set to avoid a semi-final clash with the top-ranked Indian side.

However, the host nation, who were failing to convert quite a few chances, snatched the equaliser in the 56th minute through a goal from Razie Rahim. A win for the Koreans would have given them the second spot on the group table. Malaysia, with a solid defensive performance, made sure they finished ahead of defending champions Pakistan and South Korea.

On the other hand, India have so far been untroubled in the ongoing tournament. They have comfortably sealed the top spot in the group and are the only team to have not lost a game.

India started their campaign with a huge 10-2 win over China before they played out an uninspiring 1-1 draw against their semi-final opponents on 22 October. The young Indian unit, led by PR Sreejesh, saw off a spirited challenge from arch rivals Pakistan as well before thumping China 9-0.

Malaysia also succumbed to a 2-1 loss against India, who have displayed solid attacking capabilities in the ongoing tournament. They have scored a total of 25 goals over their five group games and have only conceded six.

South Korea though have problems with their backline as they have leaked nine goals and have scored only 11. However, they will be boosted by their group stage performance against the Men in Blue. Notably, the Koreans are the only side to have snatched a point from their tie against India.

While South Koreans will have a mammoth task in hand on Saturday in their semi-final clash, India are looking set to give themselves a chance to seal their second Asian Champions Trophy title after their campaign-winning run in 2011.
