Overview

Two scores of 350 and above have not been enough for England to open their account in the ongoing three-match One Day International series. India gunned down a 351-run target in the first ODI with 11 balls to spare in Pune and the visitors fell short of a 381-run target by 15 runs in Cuttack to end up conceding an unassailable 2-0 lead.

England put pressure on the Indian batting line-up in both the matches but the hosts found a way through the initial setbacks and posted mammoth totals.

The difference between the two batting line-ups has been the visitor's inability to convert starts in big innings. While Virat Kohli, Kedar Jadhav, MS Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh have scored centuries over the last two games, only skipper Eoin Morgan has reached a three-figure score for England.

Also, Indian spinners, Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja picked up crucial wickets in the middle stages of the innings in Cuttack, which their English counterparts have not been able to do. Pacers Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah also displayed consistency at the death overs to restrict England.

Meanwhile, Kohli had hinted that his side still needed to improve in all departments and that they will go for the kill at the Eden Gardens. Indian openers Shikhar Dhawan and KL Rahul though have been dismal and the former is likely to be replaced by Ajinkya Rahane on Sunday after the left-hander reportedly suffered an injury scare.

On the other hand, Morgan's men, who will be without injured Alex Hales, have the firepower and the depth in their batting unit to prevent a whitewash. A win on Sunday will do a lot of good to their confidence ahead of the three-match Twenty20 International series, starting 26 January.
