Overview

Sydney Thunder finally opened their account this season after four straight defeats with a win in their fifth game against Melbourne Stars at the Showground Stadium on 4 December.

Skipper Shane Watson gave a glimpse of his vintage best by picking up three crucial wickets to restrict the powerful Stars line-up to just 166. In reply, England import Eoin Morgan hit a stunning last ball six to clinch the win for the Thunder.

The defending champions will be upbeat after they broke the deadlock but a test against Hobart Hurricanes on the road awaits them on Sunday. Last match's top-scorer Morgan will not be available for the Thunder as he is out on international duty for England's ODI and T20I series against India.

A lot will depend on Watson to deliver the goods for the visitors. Thunder's main are of concern has been Andre Russell's form with both the ball and the bat. The West Indies all-rounder has scored only 25 runs from five matches and has taken only three wickets. However, the inclusion of big-hitting Aiden Blizzard should work in Thunder's favour.

On the other hand, the Hurricanes have been quite inconsistent this season and are placed fifth now with two wins from five games. Tim Paine's unit defeated Adelaide Strikers by eight wickets on Tuesday but were beaten by five wickets on Friday in the reverse fixture.

Stuart Broad has been contributing with the ball but Dan Christian has been the standout for them as the Australian all-rounder is brimming with confidence after taking seven wickets in his last two games. Another good spell at home will help the Hurricanes maintain the pressure on the top four in the table.
