Overview

Global FC created history when they outclassed Singapore's Tampines Rovers in the preliminary round one match last Tuesday, thereby becoming the first Philippines' side to win a AFC Champions League match.

The United Football League holders played out a goalless first half at home in their game against the Stags but strikes from Misagh Bahadoran and Ahmad Azzawi made sure they travelled to Brisbane. Global's only previous experience at the continental stage was when they reached the group stages of 2015 AFC Cup but they are a much-improved side now.

Apart from their prolific forwards Bahadoran and Azzawi, Global also have quality imports Paul Mulders, the Dutch-born defensive midfielder and winger Shu Sasaki from Japan. Toshiaki Imai's side are in for a tough test on Tuesday and the likes of defender Amani Aguinaldo and custodian Patrick Deyo have to be at their best to stand a chance of beating Brisbane Roar.

While they have not played any league games so far in the new season, the win against Tampines would have served a huge confidence-booster and skipper Bahadoran reportedly said that his side are ready to fight and give their best.

On the other hand, Roar are coming into Tuesday's clash on the back of a 2-1 win against Western Sydney Wanderers in their A-League game on Saturday. The Brisbane-based side, who have qualified twice for the group stages of ACL (2012 and 2015), are well into their league season and they have stitched two back-to-back wins to get back to third position on the table.

Global will be playing on the road but the support they have been receiving back home should encourage them to battle against the odds. A win will mean they will face China's big-spending Shanghai Shenhua, who recently signed Carlos Tevez in the third round.
