US remake of Korean drama Good Doctor to air in fall

The American remake of the Korean drama "Good Doctor" will air in the US in the fall.

"The Good Doctor" will premiere on US network ABC and will star Freddie Highmore in the title role.

Highmore will play the role of Shaun Murphy, a surgeon with autism and savant syndrome who decides to go to a countryside and work at a hospital's surgical unit, according to ABC.

"Alone in the world and unable to personally connect with those around him, Shaun uses his extraordinary medical gifts to save lives and challenge the skepticism of his colleagues," the network added.

Highmore will reprise the role of Park Shi-on, played by Korean actor Joo Won in the original series which aired in South Korea in 2013.

Antonia Thomas will play the character of Dr. Claire Brown, who is Cha Yoon-seo in the Korean drama and played by actress Moon Chae-won.

The 25-year-old Highmore played Norman Bates in the American series "Bates Motel" from 2013 to 2017 for which he won a People's Choice Award.

He also won several awards for the film "Finding Neverland" including a Satellite Award for Outstanding New Talent, Empire Award for Best Newcomer and Critics' Choice Movie Award for Best Young Actor. .

"The Good Doctor" was developed by David Shore and Korean-American actor Daniel Dae Kim of "Lost" and "Hawaii Five-O."

Shore is the writer and executive producer of the medical drama while Kim, David Kim and Sebastian Lee are also executive producers.

The TV drama is one of the five new shows that will premiere on ABC in the fall along with "The Mayor," "The Gospel of Kevin," "Marvel's Inhumans" and "Ten Days in the Valley."

According to Korean TV network KBS, which aired the original series, "The Good Doctor" will premiere in the US in September.

The hit Korean series had 20 episodes with an average rating of 18 percent (Nielsen Korea). During its run, it topped its time slot most of the time.

At the 2013 KBS Drama Awards, Joo Won won Actor of the Year and Netizen Award while Moon Chae-won took home the Popularity Award. Both also won the Best Couple Award.
