For a third of the Singapore workforce, leaving their jobs after working for a year is the best option if they want to explore other career opportunities.

According to the latest study by professional online network LinkedIn, workers in Singapore are less committed to their current employer, with 34 percent saying that they have no intention of staying with the company for more than a year. The report also revealed that 42 percent workers are interested in learning about career opportunities elsewhere.

This rate surpasses those of neighbouring countries like Malaysia and Indonesia, where only 28 percent and 19 percent are interested in applying for other jobs. The percentage seen in Singapore is also significantly higher than the global average of 30 percent.

LinkedIn Vice President of Talent and Learning Solutions for Asia-Pacific, Feon Ang, said that salary and compensation are not the biggest consideration for these workers when mulling over changing their careers.

She noted that whilst 54 percent of these professionals are motivated by a higher salary, they are still likely to shift to a company with values that support their personal interests.

"The talent market in Singapore is well-established and professionals take active ownership of their own career advancement. In fact, Singapore has a strong pool of passive talent as they are open to opportunities. People often move to seek greener pastures when they feel stagnated at a workplace, or have unmet expectations," Ang explained.

For the remaining 67 percent of Singapore workers willing to stay with their current employer for several years, the main motivation is the opportunity to improve their skills. Others say that they enjoy the work-life balance, whilst some also have confidence in the company's future.
