Batman-style rover could be the future of exploration on Mars

NASA is displaying a concept Mars rover passenger vehicle that the space agency hopes will inspire public interest in interplanetary travel. The rover, which looks like an SUV that may have been designed for Batman, seats six humans. It is meant to be a general design concept for the kinds of vehicles that could potentially transport explorers across the surface of the red planet.

Chicago man spotted catching a ride on top of a bus like a boss

A man who apparently could not afford a ticket has been spotted riding on the top of a bus in Chicago. The video uploaded to Facebook on July 19, shows the man casually smoking a cigarette and waving at pedestrians while sat on the top of the moving bus. Lloyd Anthony D Peters, who took the video, told CBS Chicago that the man climbed on top of the bus, and lit the cigarette, and just went straight down Fullerton like a boss.

At least two dead after 6.7 magnitude earthquake hits tourist hotspots in Greece and Turkey

The US Geological Survey said at around 1.30am local time on Friday morning (21 July) a magnitude 6.7 quake struck 10km south of the Turkish city of Bodrum and 16km north-east of Kos, Greece, areas popular with British tourists. The European quake agency EMSC reported the prospect of a small tsunami. However, this was downplayed by Turkish officials who said large waves, rather than a tsunami, were expected.

Florida teens laugh, taunt and film disabled man as he drowns in lake

A group of minors in Cocoa, Florida, filmed and jeered at a man while he was drowning in a lake on July 9.The victim, a 32-year-old disabled man named Jamel Dunn, wandered into a pond near Cocoas Plaza Parkway after an argument with his fiancee, according to reports by Florida Today.He began calling for help, and his calls were heard by a group of unidentified teenagers aged 14 to 16 who filmed his last moments and called him a junkie, yelling that they werent going to enter the pond to help him.This footage was shared on the Facebook by Simone Scott, a woman who identifies herself as Dunns sister.Police found Dunns decomposed body three days later , on July 12, and questioned the teens heard in the video. The minors are not expected to face charges because they were not directly involved in Dunns death, and do not appear to have violated any Good Samaritan laws.

Australias Justine Damond did not have to die, Minneapolis police chief says

Minneapolis Police Chief Janee Harteau said on Thursday (20 July) that the fatal shooting of an Australian bride-to-be should not have happened and that Justine Damond didnt have to die. Damond was shot when she approached a police car after calling 911 to get help over a possible sexual assault in her neighbourhood just before midnight on Saturday (15 July). She succumbed to a single gunshot wound to her abdomen. Speaking to the media for the first time since the incident, Harteau said Police Officer Mohamed Noor, who fired the fatal shot, should have had the body cameras turned on. She called the shooting of the Australian the actions and judgement of one individual as she distanced her department from the incident. Harteau said she would be looking into strengthening department policy following the incident to ensure that all police officers have body cameras on when they interact with the public.

OJ Simpson is granted parole and will be released from prison

Ex-football star OJ Simpson is a free man. He was granted parole by a Nevada board on 20 July. Simpson was arrested in 2007 for stealing sports memorabilia at gunpoint. He was found guilty of armed robbery and kidnapping in 2008, and was sentenced to up to 33 years in prison. His bid for a new trial was rejected in 2013, but he was granted parole due to good behaviour. Simpson was not released due to other sentences. He has now been granted parole.
