Facebook targets children under 13 years with new messenger app For the first time, Facebook is opening up to children under age 13, with its Messenger Kids app. It released a limited preview of the app to Apple users in the US. The company said although the app targets children, it comes with strict parental controls as they can monitor their kids online activities.

What do underwater volcanic eruptions sound like? Buried in the depths of the oceans, over a million enormous underwater volcanoes puncture the seabed. Scientists have recorded their eruptions with some surprising results. Ahyi—in the Northern Mariana Islands in the Pacific Ocean—erupted for two weeks in 2014. Experts compared the sound of its eruptions to gunshots. Bogoslof, a shallow volcano in the Aleutian Islands near Alaska, sounded completely different when it erupted in 2016 and 2017. Vibrations can travel for thousands of miles before dissipating. It is very difficult to detect early signs of submarine eruptions, which can produce blankets of floating rocks, damaging boats and clogging harbors. Recording their sounds could help experts respond more quickly.

University students create 3D-pritned mask for dogs with severe facial injuries A young dog called Loca that suffered a fractured cheekbone and jawbone following an attack from another dog has been helped out by the University of Californias Davis School of Veterinary Medicine who have created a special mask for canines with such injuries. The 3D-printed exoskeleton dubbed the Exo-K9 was designed by biomedical engineering students alongside UC Davis staff. Loca is now recovering well from the surgery on her facial injuries.
