U.S. President Donald Trump has challenged his secretary of state to "compare IQ tests", if Rex Tillerson did call the president a "moron" as alleged.

"I think it's fake news, but if he did that, I guess we'll have to compare IQ tests," Trump said of Tillerson in an interview that Forbes published Tuesday. "And I can tell you who is going to win."

Tensions between Trump and Tillerson appeared to escalate amidst news reports that Tillerson considered resigning this summer. The reports suggested that Tillerson also called the president a "moron" following a July meeting with members of the president's national security team and Cabinet.

Tillerson— who is the former chief executive of one of the world's largest corporations, Exxon Mobil— said he never considered resigning but did not deny calling Trump a moron. His spokeswoman said he never used such language.

Trump, who often boasts about his intelligence and achievements, told reporters Tuesday that he still has confidence in Tillerson. He also said "I didn't undercut anybody" with the IQ test comment.

Mensa, the international club for smarties, said on Tuesday that it's ready to give the president's statements a reality check.

"Mensa would be happy to hold a testing session for President Trump and Secretary Tillerson," the group announced.
