A 250kg World War II-era bomb discovered at a construction site along Tanah Merah Coast Road has been safely disposed of on Thursday, April 2, the authorities confirmed.

The unexploded ordnance, which was found during construction works on Tuesday morning, March 31, was assessed to be too unstable to move. As a result, the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) Explosive Ordnance Disposal team carried out a controlled on-site disposal operation in the early hours of Thursday.

The disposal was completed between 2.30 am and 4.30 am within the Changi East development area, where the future Terminal 5 is planned. The authorities had taken precautionary measures in the lead-up to the operation, coordinating closely to ensure public safety.

In response to CNA, Changi Airport Group (CAG) said that the operation was "completed successfully early this morning" and did not affect airport operations. Checks conducted after the disposal found no damage to nearby infrastructure or systems.

The police had earlier said that they were working alongside the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore, CAG, SAF and the Singapore Civil Defence Force to manage the situation and carry out the disposal safely.

The discovery of such war relics is not uncommon in Singapore, a legacy of the island's wartime past. The authorities have advised the public to stay clear of such items and report them immediately if found.
