Overview

Melbourne Stars have had an inconsistent campaign so far notching up only two wins from four games. However, they pocketed the much-needed boost when they decimated Renegades in the Melbourne derby on Saturday by 46 runs.

Opener Rob Quiney and England import Kevin Pietersen combined to post 200 on the board, which proved too much for the Renegades. Adam Zampa picked up three wickets along with Michael Beer to add to the hosts' woes.

However, the Stars will be missing key players Glenn Maxwell, James Faulkner and leg-spinner Zampa, all of whom are out on international duty for the One Day International Series against Pakistan.

It will be interesting to see how Stars, who are occupying a mid-table position, fare without their superstars. But the recent form of Pietersen is an encouraging sign for David Hussey's team.

Stars also have included wicketkeeper-batsman Peter Handscomb, who is coming into BBL after having a solid run in the Test series against Pakistan. Leg-spinner Liam Bowe and quickie Cameron Gannon have also joined the squad as replacements.

On the other hand, Strikers clinched only their second win of the tournament in their fifth game, against Hobart Hurricanes on Friday. Ben Dunk continued his good form with a 49-ball 79 and helped his team gun down a 162-run target with 10 balls to spare. Skipper Brad Hodge also contributed with a 20-ball 30.

Strikers will also miss pace bowler Billy Stanlake, who is set to join the ODI squad. The 22-year-old impressed with his raw pace during his stint. It will be important for all-rounder Kieron Pollard and Chris Jordan to step up in the absence of their strike bowler if they are to remain in contention for the semi-final spot.
