Xiaomi Android 7.0 Nougat release status and supported device list revealed

Xiaomi has been quite disappointingly slow in releasing timely Android updates for its flagship devices, while its entry-level handsets are barely getting any attention with few MIUI updates available that limit the capabilities of the phone to just stock features and apps.

The weekly roll out of MIUI updates brings just security patches and UI enhancements without really adding anything to the stock features or apps list.

Nevertheless, several Xiaomi devices that are running Android 6.0 Marshmallow are poised to receive the Android 7.0 Nougat update soon, especially as Google has started benchmarking OEMs based on the frequency of Android updates being pushed to their flagship handsets.

Here is the full list of supported Xiaomi devices (running Android Marshmallow) along with the Nougat release status:

Xiaomi Mi Mix and Mi Max

Both the Mi Mix and Mi Max are poised to receive the Android Nougat update as they are newer devices from Xiaomi. The Max is already confirmed to receive the Nougat update, according to a recent changelog (see screenshot above) released by a Xiaomi staff member.

Xiaomi Mi Series

The Mi Series comprising Mi 5/5s/Plus is expected to get the Android 7.0 update along with the MIUI 9 skin sometime in Q1 2017, as rival OEM handset makers including Xiaomi and Motorola are contemplating the idea of skipping Android 7.0 update to embrace the latest Android 7.1.1 release.

Considering the recent developments, Xiaomi is likely to roll out its forthcoming Mi6 flagship phone with Android 7.0 and MIUI 9 preinstalled.

Meanwhile, Mi 4c and Mi 4s are confirmed to receive the Android 7.0 update as a beta test build for the same is already in the works.

Xiaomi Mi Note series

Xiaomi Mi Note series has been let down with the ageing KitKat firmware on board, despite featuring a power-packed hardware configuration.

The Note Pro is still stuck with the outdated Lollipop firmware, which leaves little hope of receiving the Nougat update for several handsets, with the exception of Mi Note 2 that flaunts the latest Snapdragon 821 processor chipset on board.

The Mi Note 2 qualifies for the Nougat update solely because it runs Marshmallow out-of-the-box, which is a basic prerequisite to run Nougat update.

Xiaomi Redmi Series

Except for the Redmi Pro which is powered by the latest Helio X25 processor, there is no other handset in the Xiaomi Redmi series that qualifies for receiving the Nougat update.

Meanwhile, the Redmi 4/4a/Prime and the Redmi 3s/3s Prime/3x are destined to remain on the Marshmallow firmware due to their weaker hardware configuration. The low-end Redmi 3/3 Pro are expected to stick to Lollipop firmware, owing to major hardware limitations and lack of OEM support.

Xiaomi Redmi Note Series

As far as the Redmi Note Series is concerned, only the flagship Redmi Note 4 is expected to receive the Android 7.0 update while Redmi Note 3 and other older devices are unlikely to get an upgrade beyond Marshmallow.
