'Thor: Ragnarok' tops weekend box office in Korea

The movie sold 1.57 million tickets in its first weekend from October 27 to 29 and earned US$11.89 million.

The Hollywood superhero movie "Thor: Ragnarok" lorded over the weekend box office in South Korea as it continued to be No. 1 since it opened on October 25.

The movie sold 1.57 million tickets in its first weekend from October 27 to 29 and earned US$11.89 million. Its revenue share for the three-day period was 63.76 percent, according to the Korean Film Council (KOFIC).

Hemsworth plays Thor, who, according to Marvel, "is imprisoned on the other side of the universe without his mighty hammer and finds himself in a race against time to get back to Asgard to stop Ragnarok—the destruction of his homeworld and the end of Asgardian civilization—at the hands of an all-powerful new threat, the ruthless Hela."

As of October 29, the movie has sold 2.21 million tickets and has earned $15.74 million since opening. It topped the Korean box office in its first day with 415,721 in total admissions and $2.3 million in revenue.

In the international market, "Thor: Ragnarok" has already earned $107.6 million with the United Kingdom posting the highest earning with $15.8 million followed by South Korea.

In South Korea, "Thor: Ragnarok" dislodged the Korean action film "The Outlaws" at the daily and weekend box offices.

"The Outlaws," starring Ma Dong Seok and Yoon Kye Sang, dropped to second place in the weekend, earning $3.59 million and selling 476,051 tickets. Since opening on October 3, the film has 5.84 million in total admissions and earnings of $42.65 million, according to KOFIC data. It topped the weekend box office for two straight weeks before "Thor: Ragnarok" took over the top spot.

Placing third is "Let Me Eat Your Pancreas" followed by "Geostorm," "Man of Will," "The Fortress," "My Tomorrow, Your Yesterday," "Beautiful Tomorrow," "Two Buddies and a Badger" and "No Game No Life Zero."
