If you desperately want that long pending promotion or want to impress your new neighbours, just throw an invitation for a lavish dinner on their door. The trick is simple: first, make the first impression remarkable by setting a perfect table and then fill their plates with delicious delicacies and you will notice what big changes one right decision could bring in your life.

So here we are telling you how to start with the right table setting. Its a cakewalk only if you are well-versed with the basic table setting rules for a beautifully set table always sets the perfect tone.

1. Choose the right table linens

The rule of thumb is that for a formal meal, the "drop" should be between 10 and 15 inches on all sides while for an informal meal, it should be around 10. Also pick the right colour that could compliment the decent dinner setting.

2. Art of positioning plates and knives: Back to basics

It is very crucial to place the knives and forks carefully along the plates at their right position for a beautifully crafted table never goes unnoticed. Knowing the following basic rules you could also become the master.

A.Plates: Each dinner plate should be placed a thumb knuckles' length from the edge of the table. If you are serving the salad, place the salad plate inside the middle of the dinner plate.

B. Soup Bowl: The soup spoon is placed on the outside as a rule of thumb says "to work from outside in".

D. Fork and Knives: The forks should be placed on the left side of the plate and the knife and spoon on the right. Place the salad fork to the left of the dinner fork and place the spoon to the right of the knife. Keep the table knife with its smooth side up so that you cannot see the serrated side.

E. Desserts

If you are wise enough to include delightful desserts in your menu then place the dessert utensils above the plate. The dessertspoon and cake fork also go above the plate (with the cake fork pointing right, and the dessertspoon pointing left).

F. Napkins

A napkin can be folded (either in a rectangular or a triangle shape) or rolled and placed on the center of a plate. But if you want it to the side, it should go on the left with the forks.

3. Candles

If you love to delight your guests with candles and flowers then you are on the right track without a shadow of doubt. Candles add a pleasant ambience but avoid using scented candles that could interfere with the relishing aroma of the food.

4. Glasses

Glasses are always placed on the right side above the knives and spoons. The water glass is kept closer to the centre of the plate, and a wine glass is to its outside left.
