SATS gears up for airports of the future with augmented reality technology

Singapore's SATS on Tuesday said it would introduce augmented reality (AR) smart glasses in its ramp handling operations as the in-flight catering service provider gears up to handle increasing passenger demand and beat competition.

AR smart glass will provide SATS' ramp handling staff with critical information such as loading instructions in real-time, the company said in a statement.

This hands-free process also improves safety, and increases the accuracy and efficiency of baggage and cargo loading, it said.

Data from the International Air Transport Association forecasts global air passenger demand to double in the next two decades from 3.8 billion in 2016 to 7.2 billion passengers in 2035.

And while Singapore is expanding its airport to meet future needs, use of technologies such as AR will enable more smooth, safe and seamless flights.

AR technological initiative increases productivity and can potentially shorten loading time by as much as 15 minutes, thereby creating competitive advantages for airline customers.

"This innovation will directly benefit our airport workers, raising their productivity and making their workplace safer. This is the way to tap on technology to keep our airport and airlines ahead of their competition, " said Khaw Boon Wan, coordinating minister for Infrastructure and Minister for Transport.

SATS, which developed the project in partnership with the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore, will be introducing the smart glass in phases with full implementation expected by mid of next year.
