Overview

Saina Nehwal is looking set to emerge successful in her season-opening campaign at the 2017 Malaysia Masters Grand Prix Gold tournament.

The top seed looks in good shape after beating fifth seed Yip Pin Xiu in the semi-final in just 32 minutes on Saturday. Despite conceding an early lead, Saina fought back to take the first game and made light work of her Hong Kong opponent 21-10 in the second.

The Indian shuttler has been in dominant form and has not dropped a single game in the ongoing tournament. All her wins have come under 45 minutes and the world number 10 looks determined to clinch glory in Malaysia post her comeback from a knee injury, that affected her Rio Games campaign and the remainder of the 2016 season.

Saina will take on Thailand teenager Porpanwee Chouchuang in the title match on Sunday. It will be a test for the world number 67 against the in-form Indian shuttler, especially after her marathon semi-final win against world number 19 Cheung Ngan Yi.

Pornpawee dropped the second game but held her composure to pull off an upset 21-19, 20-22, 21-18 win against the Hong Kong shuttler. The 18-year-old, who has been climbing the BWF ladder with titles in Sydney and India in 2015, will be motivated to cause another upset. However, a lot will depend on her fitness and unseeded shuttler has to punch above her weight if she is to stand a chance against the former world number one.
