Overview

Myanmar take on Cambodia in their second group clash of the 2016 AFF Suzuki Cup in Yangon on 23 November. Both teams have lost their opening battle on Sunday and a defeat on Wednesday will deal a severe blow to their chances of making it past the group stages in this year's Asean tournament. Notably, they are the only two sides in the tournament to have not reached the semi-final so far.

On Sunday, the hosts went down 2-1 against group heavyweights Vietnam despite coming up with a strong show in the second half. After conceding an early goal, the White Angels equalised with a goal from Aung Thu only to concede another one late in the match.

It would be crucial for the co-hosts to collect three full points and keep their hopes alive in front of their passionate home crowd on Wednesday.

Head coach Gerd Zeise said he was disappointed to start the tournament at home on a losing note but was confident of a strong comeback from his lads.

"It was not a satisfactory start for us, it would have been better if we got at least a point. You can lose against Vietnam but when it happens in the first game, it's not so good," Zeise said, as quoted by the tournament's official website.

Cambodia, on the other hand, showed they were by no means pushovers with a strong effort against Malaysia in their tournament opener. However, they were gutted to not even grab a point from the clash, despite taking the lead twice in the game.

Cambodia's hopes will rest on Chan Vathanaka, who scored a brace in their defeat on Sunday.

"Tomorrow's game will be a big challenge for us. Myanmar have prepared well and their players have showed good patience for every game. But our players will still challenge them and we are in the process of developing," head coach Lae Tae Hoon said.
