Overview

Lee Chong Wei begins his BWF World Superseries Finals 2016 campaign at the Hamdan Sports Complex in Dubai on 14 December against second-seeded South Korean shuttler Son Wan Ho.

The Malaysian shuttler was handed a tough draw as he was placed in Group B along with Son, Rio Olympic bronze medalist Viktor Axelsen and Hong Kong Open 2016 winner Ng Ka Long. Also, Chong Wei is the lowest seed among his group mates in the tournament.

However, it has been a solid year for the world number one shuttler as he won his third straight Rio Olympic silver medal and three superseries titles as well, with the latest coming after the Games at the Japan Open. The 32-year-old though suffered a knee injury, that kept him out of the remaining Superseries tournaments of the year.

In Dubai, Chong Wei would want to get back to his best and make a strong bid for his fifth Superseries Finals title. He will be up against the South Korean shuttler, who has been consistent in the 2016 season.

Son, the world number six, is heading into the tournament on the back of winning his first title - Korea Masters 2016 - earlier this month. The 28-year-old had been consistently reaching the final stages of the Superseries tournament but a title has been eluding him so far.

On Wednesday, Son, would want to start on a high in Dubai, will be up against a shuttler, against whom he has had very little success. Notably, Chong Wei had beaten him at the Thomas and Uber Cup and Malaysia Open earlier this year to bag a 10-1 head-to-head advantage over the South Korean.
