Overview

Carolina Marin takes on Kim Na Young in the second round of the 2016 Denmark Open at the Odense Sports Complex on 20 October.

Marin has returned to court for the first time after her gold-medal winning campaign at the 2016 Rio Olympics, in which she outclassed India's PV Sindhu in the final. However, she did not have easy opening match in Denmark on Wednesday.

Local shuttler Julie Dawal Jakobsen came up with a stiff fight against the top seed. Marin wasted no time to assert her dominance with a 21-13 win in the first game, in which she collected seven consecutive points.

Jakobsen though staged a strong comeback and took the second game 21-16 and nearly caused an upset in the opening round clash. Marin though held her nerves in the fiercely-fought decider, in which the Dane had the match point at 21-20 only to see the Spaniard taking the game in the final moments.

Marin later revealed she had fallen ill on the eve of the match and doubted her availability for the opening round. She also added that she hopes for a quick recovery to get in shape for the upcoming matches.

"I didn't know if I would play. I was really sick. I just fought to the end and tried my best though I couldn't control my game. I hope I will recover for tomorrow," Marin was quoted as saying by Badminton World Federation Super Series website.

The world number one though will have a relatively easy outing against South Korean Young on Thursday.

Young crushed higher-ranked Mauritius shuttler Kate Foo Kune with a straight-game win in the first round. However, the unseeded South Korean will find it difficult against Marin, who is known for her imposing game.
