Will Snapchat IPO take a hit from the curious case of 'melting' Spectacle case?

Users complain, after charging the Snapchat Spectacles the internals of the specs are getting melted

Snapchat Spectacles have been quite the rage for some time and it has all the good things going for it. These pair of smart glasses are able to record the world from your point of view but doesn't compromise on your fashion quotient, which is a win-win for the social media driven generation. The adulation and the frenzy to own one of them to create and share images has been huge.

However, this frenzy has recently got the sour taste after a user complained that after charging the Spectacles case, which powers the spectacle, for a half-hour, "the internals melted". The user said he big button and LEDs became a 'wired mash."

The user sent a picture of the damaged case to TechCrunch. It had been bought in mid-December from a New York City Snap bot pop-up store. He had put it up to charge with an 5W wall charging brick,, which until now had worked fine to charge up the case, "About a half hour later, I got a burning smell. Looked at the case, and it had melted the internals. The case was very hot when I went to touch it."

Snap Inc., Snapchat's parent company, was quick to control damage and offered to provide the user with a new pair of Spectacles and get the old one so they could investigate the cause.

Snap Inc.'s spokesperson said: "Our team is in touch with this customer and we are working with him to investigate this issue. We can't comment further until we know more, but want to emphasize that nothing is more important to us than the safety of our community."

With Snap Inc.'s expected IPO in March, they would do good to ensure that there is no more melting spectacles case in circulation. A Galaxy Note 7-like incident would hugely tarnish the firm's reputation while it's still licking its wounds after Facebook-owned Instagram quashed its business in the recent times.
