Star Wars: Chosen One Luke Skywalker might be the one to kill Kylo Ren!

Obi-Wan Kenobi reveals in Star Wars Rebels that Luke is the Chosen One to bring balance to the Force.

There is a lot of hype surrounding Star Wars episode VIII, titled The Last Jedi. Most of the hype centres around Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, who rumours suggest, could be the final Jedi, as the title suggests. Recently, a major revelation on Star Wars Rebels may significantly affect Rian Johnson's film, even the character of Luke himself.

In the latest episode of Star Wars Rebels titled Twin Suns, Obi-Wan Kenobi stumbles once gain, upon his old enemy Darth Maul. Maul had killed Obi-wan's master Qui-Gon Jinn in Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999). Obi-wan had then sliced the devil-faced Darthomirian in half. It was later learnt however, that Maul somehow survived. In Twin Suns however, Obi-wan kills Maul for good.

In his dying moments, Darth Maul asks Obi-wan whether the person he is protecting is the chosen one. When Obi-Wan answers in the affirmative, Maul dies, saying: "He will avenge us."

Maul thus obviously felt somehow betrayed by the dark side of the force, especially by Emperor Palpatine, who becomes Darth Sidious, the master of Darth Vader.

There is no doubt about the identity of the person Obi-Wan is protecting in Tatooine. It's none other than Luke Skywalker. This totally alters the identity of the chosen one, who, according to Star Wars creator George Lucas, was Luke's father, Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader.

The chosen one is to be a person who will bring balance to the Force. Lucas had argued that despite being a murderous villain, Anakin had fulfilled that prophecy by realising his mistake and killing the Emperor, who was the source of all ruin. Inverse.com notes George Lucas saying in 2005: "Even when Anakin turns into Darth Vader, he is still the Chosen One. Darth Vader does become the hero. Darth Vader does destroy the Sith, meaning himself and the Emperor. He does it, because he is redeemed by his son."

However, Lucas no longer owns Star Wars. So, Disney and Lucasfilm may not need to follow Lucas's original intentions anymore. It remains to be seen whether The Last Jedi is affected by this sudden retconning of Star Wars. Seeing as Star Wars rebels is official canon, Rian Johnson's film is expected to refer to this development. After all, Mark Hamill has been the centre of news surrounding The Last Jedi.

Luke Skywalker being the chosen one means it is he, not Rey and the others who'll put an end to the First Order and bring the prophesised balance to the force. We had learned previously that Luke had trained Han Solo and Leia Organa's son Ben. But Ben was seduced with the dark side by Snoke and he betrayed Luke. Luke might be the one to erase his mistake and kill his nephew who has adopted the name of Kylo Ren.
