Saturday Night Live to Hulu: Series that rocked Emmys 2017

Saturday Night Live came out strong at the Emmys 2017 by bagging nine awards out of 22 nominations, along with shows like Big Little Lies, Hulu, and The Handmaid's Tale.

Highlights of the 2017 Emmys: From Sean Spicers appearance to a naked Stephen Colbert

The long-running NBC sketch series, Saturday Night Live, stole the show at the Emmy Awards on Sunday, September 17.

Saturday Night Live came out strong at the Emmy by bagging 9 awards out of 22 nominations at the 69th Annual Emmy Awards. The series received top honours for Outstanding Variety Sketch Series and Outstanding Directing for a Variety Series Category. Alec Baldwin won Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy series and Kate Mc Kinnon was picked for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.

"I remember the first time we won this award. It was after the first season in 1976. I remember thinking... this was the high point and there would never be another season as crazy, as unpredictable, as frightening, as exhausting or as exhilarating. Turns out I was wrong," said Lorne Micheals, the creator of the sketch series, about the show that aims at various issues, especially US politics.

Big Little Lies

Next in line comes the limited series, Big Little Lies, which took home 8 awards, bringing more power to phenomenal women in several categories including Outstanding Limited series. Alexander Skarsgard bagged Outstanding Actor In a Limited Series or Movie, Nicole Kidman won Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Limited Series Or Movie and Laura Dern took Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Limited Series Or Movie.

Reese Witherspoon accepted the award from legendary Cicely Tyson. Anika Noni Rose sought help from Nicole Kidman said that both were confused as to who should speak. But, they let the microphone do the work and thanked HBO and Liane Moriarty, the author, for making the series possible. Kidman felt overwhelmed at the power of the television industry. Witherspoon also added that she is happy for the journey of incredible women in the series and wants to make them the hero of the stories.

Handmaid's Tale

The Handmaid's Tale had a tie with Big Little Lies as they both won 8 Emmys. Elisabeth Moss won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, and the series swept away awards in the category of Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series. Even the political satire Veep won in the category of Outstanding Comedy Series.

Hulu

Interestingly, Hulu was the apple of the eye in this award ceremony as it is the first streaming show to have 5 wins at the Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series. This series jumped from just two nominations in 2016 to 18 this year. They also scored multiple nominations for the documentary -"The Beatles: Eight Days a Week — The Touring Years."
