Samsung to pay $11.6 million to Huawei for patent infringement

Huawei sought compensation for the more than 30 million products that were sold for $12.7 billion by the South Korean giant, including the Galaxy S7.

Samsung's mainland subsidiary in China has been ordered by a court to pay Yuan 80 million to Huawei Technologies after the South Korean smartphone maker has been proved to be guilty of patent infringement.

Three units of Samsung have been ordered by the Quanzhou Intermediary Court to pay the sum for infringing a patent held by Huawei Device Co Limited, the handset unit of Huawei, the Quanzhou Evening News, a government-run newspaper, reported.

This verdict marks the first victory of the Chinese firm against Samsung among several other lawsuits filed by Huawei against Samsung in both China and the US. Samsung subsequently countersued Huawei in China for IP infringement.

While a Huawei spokesperson said that they are welcoming the decision, Samsung said they will respond to the court after reviewing the decision. '

Huawei sued Samsung China Investment Co Limited, as well as a unit in Huizhou, a unit in Tianjin and also two other Chinese electronics companies for making and selling more than 20 kinds of Samsung smartphone and tablet products that it said infringed their patent.

The court ordered the five firms to stop infringing Huawei's copyrights and ordered the three Samsung units to pay for the damage.
