Rio Paralympics 2016: Theresa Goh wins second medal for Singapore

Theresa Goh clocked 1:55.55s to finish third in the final of Women's 100m backstroke SB4 event at Rio Paralympics.

Theresa Goh won a bronze medal in the Women's 100m breaststroke SB4 event at Rio Paralympics 2016 on Monday.

The Singapore swimmer clocked 1:55.55s finishing behind Norway's Sarah Louise Rung (1:44.94s) and Italy's Giulia Ghiretti (1:50.58s). The 29-year-old had set an Asian record (1:54.50s) in the heats at the Games.

Goh became Singapore's first Paralympian swimmer when she made her debut in the pool at the 2004 Athens Paralympic Games. She was diagnosed with spina bifida at birth and is paralysed from the waist down, according to The Straits Times. After narrowly missing medals at the Games over the years, the Singaporean ended her medal drought on Monday morning at the Olympics Aquatic Stadium.

One of the most consistent performers at the Asean Para Games with 27 gold medals, Goh has now become the second athlete from Singapore to win a medal in Rio after Yip Pin Xiu won a gold in the Women's S2 100m backstroke event on 10 September. While Yip is favourite to bag another gold in the S2 50m backstroke on Friday, Goh will compete in S5 50m freestyle and S5 100m freestyle events.

Singapore president Tony Tan congratulated Goh and lauded Team Singapore's efforts at the Rio Paralympics.
