Netflix's first original series 'House of Cards' sixth and final season will feature Robin Wright in the lead role, the company said on Monday.

Wright will be replacing Kevin Spacey, who led the show to critical acclaim but was fired after a series of sexual assault allegations this fall.

The final season of House of Cards will include eight episodes (previous seasons have been 13 episodes long), and will focus on Wright's character Claire Underwood.

Wright's character finished season five by winning election as the first U.S. female president after wresting power from her husband.

In late October, the Broadway actor Anthony Rapp told BuzzFeed that Spacey had tried to sexually assault him in 1986, when Rapp was 14.

Spacey apologized for what he described as "deeply inappropriate drunken behavior."

That report was followed by a slew of other allegations of sexual misconduct from more than 20 people.

The streaming service and its production partner Media Rights Capital almost immediately suspended production, with the fate of the season left up in the air.

Netflix said it would not be involved with any further production involving Spacey.
