Malaysian police arrested a woman on Friday for allegedly causing the death of a four-month-old baby girl whom she was babysitting in Kampung Jerai, Bukit Selambau.

It was reported that the baby girl, who died on 31 October at 10.20am, was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital in Kedah's capital city of Alor Setar.

Kuala Muda district police chief, ACP Md Zukir Md Isa, was reported saying that the doctor who was treating the girl informed the police about the incident. The doctor reportedly claimed that the baby was suffering from epilepsy, was unconscious and was in a critical condition.

"The victim was suspected of having been abused based on injuries such as brain hemorrhage and a fractured skull," said the officer, according to news website Bernama.

After the initial investigation, it was revealed that the 40-year-old accused was the victim's nanny since August 2016.

Police also said that the accused was given a remuneration of RM250 for taking care of the baby whose parents worked at a nearby factory.

According to reports Md Zukir further said, "The suspect claims to have swung the cradle using her left hand and the baby's head had hit the floor at about 7.30am, but at the time the victim was still conscious. At 8.30am the suspect sent the victim to her grandmother's house, not knowing what else to do."

However, the grandmother noticed that the baby was not in her usual self and took her to the Bukit Selambau Health Clinic.
