LTA seeks bidders for installation of 3,000 bike parking lots at MRT stations

This move is in support of the growing cyclist population and to augment the existing 17,500 bicycle parking lots at MRT stations.

Cyclists and bike enthusiasts in Singapore can look forward to having accessible parking lots at MRT stations as the Land Transport Authority seeks bidders for its bicycle parking project.

As its continues improving the cycling infrastructure of the city-state, LTA will be calling tenders for the installation of 3,000 bicycle parking lots at 28 MRT stations.

This move is in support of the growing cyclist population and to augment the existing 17,500 bicycle parking lots at MRT stations. These stations include Punggol, Paya Lebar, Bedok, Pasir Ris, Potong Pasir, Sengkang, Toa Payoh, and many others.

Additionally, the new Downtown Line 3 (DTL3) stations will also be installed with 1,700 bicycle parking lots in total. LTA targets stations that are likely to see more cyclist traffic like the Tampines station, an interchange station connecting the East-West-Line and Downtown Line.

The transport authority also added 34 new bicycle parking zones at existing MRT stations and bus stops, which can accommodate 1,400 bicycles in total.

"More of these parking zones will be progressively provided at more locations island-wide for the convenience of commuters. LTA is also working with NParks, HDB and Town Councils to increase bicycle parking capacity at other public spaces with high demand," LTA said in a statement.

It urged and reminded the public to park their bicycles within the designated parking areas.

To recall, LTA has introduced new bicycle parking zones located at Punggol, Hougang, Paya Lebar, Khatib, Sembawang, Pioneer and Lakeside in March as it pushes for Singapore to be a car-lite city.

The efforts by the LTA to promote the usage of bikes as a means of travel comes as the bike-sharing services by firms like Mobike and of are gaining traction.
