Overview

Lee Chong Wei lost his opening round of the 2016 BWF Dubai World Superseries Finals to Son Wan Ho. Notably, the world number one had lost only once to the South Korean in 11 matches - four years ago in the final of Indian Open Superseries, before Wednesday's clash.

The Malaysian, who was playing his first competitive match since he suffered a hamstring injury in the quarter-final defeat to Brice Leverdez at 2016 Denmark Open in October, looked out of sorts and conceded the match in straight games 21-10, 21-16 to the second seed in the Group B clash.

Chong Wei has not had the right start in pursuit of his fourth World Superseries Finals title but the three-time Olympic silver medallist believes he has it in him to make a strong comeback on Thursday.

"Winning and losing are part of the game. I will try to recover and try my best for the next match," Chong Wei said, as quoted by the tournament's official website.

On the other hand, Chong Wei's opponent Ng also lost his opening round match against Rio Games bronze medallist Viktor Axelsen. The Hong Kong shuttler, who won a Superseries title earlier this month at home, battled hard but lost 21-13, 21-17.

Both Chong Wei and Ng need a win on Thursday to keep their hopes of remaining in the tournament alive. However, the Hong Kong shuttler has a tough task in hand as he has not even managed to win a game against the Malaysian in their last four meetings, which includes the second round defeat at Indonesia earlier this year.
