Three Indonesian policemen have been injured in a knife attack by a suspected Islamic State supporter in capital Jakarta.

The alleged sympathizer of the Islamic State group had also planted bombs in the Cikokol area of Tangerang, Banten, in the capital. Police bomb squads were at the scene on Thursday morning.

Local TV channels reported that the knife-wielding attacker had pasted an IS sticker on a building near a police check point.

"The perpetrator was shot but he's still alive ... "We suspect the perpetrator is an ISIS sympathiser," National Police spokesman Boy Rafli Amar told Reuters.

The attack took place near a school in the Cikokol area a little after 7am local time. The police said the attacker was a 22-year-old unemployed man they identified as SA.

"The suspect attacked wildly using a dagger and he was also throwing two sticks resembling explosive devices," Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Awi Setiyono said, according to the Jakarta Post.

Rising terror strikes

Police shot down the attacker and took him to Kramat Jati Hospital in East Jakarta. Officials identified the injured policemen as Tangerang Police chief Comr. Efendi, First. Insp. Bambang Haryadi and traffic police Chief Brig Sukardi.

In January this year, four Islamic State-linked militants launched a gun and bomb attack in Jakarta, resulting in eight deaths. In July, a police station in Solo was blown up by militants, injuring a police officer.

Following the Jakarta attack Indonesian police launched a series of crackdowns on jihadi cells and arrested dozens of suspected Islamic radicals.

In August, Indonesian police arrested six suspected militants in Batam island for allegedly planning to launch a rocket attack on Singapore's Marina Bay.
