Fast & Furious 8 takes top spot at Korean box office in April

Two Hollywood films took the top spots at the box office in South Korea in April.

"Fast & Furious 8" is the bestselling film in Korea for the month followed by "Beauty and the Beast."

The Vin Diesel starrer, released on April 12, raked in $23.3 million and sold 3.19 million tickets for the month. To date, "Fast & Furious 8" has earned $26.25 million, based on statistics from the Korean Film Council (KOFIC).

"Beauty and the Beast" took in $11.12 million with 1.54 million in admissions in April. Since its release in Korea on March 16, the Disney movie starring Emma Watson and Dan Stevens has made $37.15 million with 5.13 million tickets sold.

In the Top 10 movies in Korea for April, four are American films while six are Korean.

Placing third is Korea's "The Prison," starring Han Suk-kyu and Kim Rae-won, which collected $8.17 million in April for a total of $20.99 million since its release on March 23 with 2.93 million in total admissions.

Fourth is "The Mayor," starring Choi Min-sik and Kwak Do-won, which has earned $6.17 million in April for a total of $9.16 million and 1.34 million in tickets sold as of May 8.

"The King's Case Note" came in fifth with $4.94 million earned at the box office last month. Starring Lee Sun-kyun and Ahn Jae-wong, the film has grossed $10.45 million as of May 8 since its release on April 26.

The sixth to tenth places for April are "Daddy You, Daughter Me" (Korea), $4.35 million; "Ghost in the Shell" (U.S.), $3.76 million; "Life" (U.S.), $3.34 million; "One Line" (Korea), $2.09 million; and "Oneday" (Korea), $1.65 million.

According to KOFIC, the Korean box office earned a total of $79.54 million from 390 Korean and foreign films in April, down by 19.7 percent from a total gross of $99.1 million in March in which 430 films were shown.

Attendance in April totaled 11.21 million, down from 13.85 million in March.
