Wu Yongning, a 26-year old man hailing from China, filmed his own death as he plunged from a 62-story building in the city of Changsha while performing a 'rooftopping' stunt.

The act called 'rooftopping' which means climbing exceptionally tall buildings without safety apparatus, has become highly popular globally in the recent years.

Wu had over a million followers and had posted around 300 videos on the social network Weibo. The posts contained his extreme and dramatic short videos showing him balancing or hovering on high tall buildings without using safety equipment.

In November, Wu stopped posting videos and this had caused concern among his fans.

Chinese media reported that Wu was taking part in a challenge to win a considerable amount of prize money.

The unfortunate event of Wu's death took place on November 8, but the news was only ratified when his girlfriend confirmed it a month later in a post on a Chinese social media site.

He had also warned his followers in his posts not to imitate his risky performances. He was trained in martial arts and had earlier participated in some television and film productions.

However, he gained popularity only through his rooftop posts on social media, according to local media reports.

A family member stated that he was taking part in a "rooftopping" challenge with the prize money amounting to 100,000 yuan (£11,300), although the nature of the competition and its sponsor was uncertain.

"He planned to propose to his girlfriend (the day after the challenge)," said his step-uncle according to the South China Morning Post.

"He needed the money for the wedding, and for medical treatment for his ailing mother," his uncle further added.

Charlie_7U, another rooftopper uploaded a photo taken with Wu, saying: "He went a bit over the top, always trying things that are beyond his ability".

"I have even saved him once... we stopped playing together," he added.

Fans are shocked and distraught over this ill-fated event and a supporter commented saying, "I became speechless after I found out from news that you were doing all that to pay for your ill mother's hospital treatment. You are one of those people in this world, you will do anything for your loved ones, absolutely anything."
