Overview

Tennis fans are set to be treated to a high-octane hard court final as early as in the first week of 2017 as Sir Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic will face each other in the final of Qatar Open 2017 on Saturday.

World number one Murray has continued from where he left in 2016, in which he won the ATP World Tour Final against the world number two and dethroned the latter from the top spot. The Brit has not dropped a set yet in the ongoing tournament and outclassed Tomas Berdych in the semi-final 6-3, 6-4 without breaking a sweat.

On the other hand, defending champion Djokovic was tested to the limits in his marathon semi-final clash against Spain's Fernando Verdasco. Murray was leading 4-2 in the first set only to see it slip away from him 6-4. And in the second Verdasco had five match points but the Serb held on to his nerves and saved all of them to take it to the decider, which he won 6-3.

It will be interesting to see how Djokovic matches up against the in-form Brit, who is on a 28-match winning streak. The world number two has a 24-11 head-to-head advantage over his opponent and also leads 10-8 in tournament finals. In 2016 as well, Djokovic defeated Murray thrice but the latter clinched the all important Tour Finals in straight sets and has been looking invincible for a while now.

While both players would want to begin 2017 on a high, the result on Saturday will also be a crucial one as the top two seeds will be looking for some winning momentum before they head into this year's first Grand Slam - Australian Open, starting 16 January.
