Singapore: Motorcyclist arrested for involving in tussle with policemen after reckless driving

A Singaporean was arrested for assaulting three police officers to evade arrest.

A video showing a man scuffling with three police officers, surfaced on Facebook on Friday. Upon investigation the accused was identified as Ampalagam Alagu, 41, and has been charged with three counts of assault.

The suspect was apprehended for reckless motorcycle driving along the pavement. The incident happened near Block 405 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 10 at around 9.15am.

Special Constables Corporal Galvin Tey Zhi Peng, Hung Yung Wei and Senior Station Inspector Geok Joong Yin were injured in the tussle. According to reports, Alagu used force to evade arrest. The video also shows two passers-by helping the officers to pin him down.

While one of the officers is currently being treated for head injuries at Tan Tock Seng Hospital, the other one is dealing with a broken thumb.

"The police take a serious view of hurt against police officers who are discharging their duties. The police thank members of the public who stepped forward to assist in the arrest," said a statement, according to Straits Times.

Alagu will be produced in court on 18 August after he goes through a psychiatric evaluation. If convicted, he can be jailed for up to 15 years and fined or caned.
