Singapore: Fire breaks out at Orchard Towers; no reports of injury

Singapore Civil Defence Force spokesperson says an investigation is ongoing to find out the cause of the fire.

A fire broke out at Orchard Towers in Singapore on Wednesday morning, but there were no reports of any injury.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it was informed about the incident at about 8.15 am and it immediately dispatched two fire engines, two red rhinos, two fire bikes and two support vehicles.

A spokesperson for SCDF said about 15 people self-evacuated before SCDF arrived on the scene. He added that the fire was extinguished with a water jet and an investigation is ongoing to find out the cause of the fire.

The Straits Times reported that the fire broke out on the lower levels of one of the two tower blocks, where Jasons, The Gourmet Grocer supermarket is located.

Vera Tan, an accounts assistant, said when she arrived at the supermarket to buy a drink, the market was closed and SCDF officers were seen on the premises.

"When I went in, we could still go up. But the neighbouring building - the other tower - was pitch black and it was smoky," Tan told The Straits Times.
