'Pokemon Yellow' hits Apple Watch via Game Boy emulator

Avid Pokemon fans are in for a special treat as it has become a favourite pastime for developers to port popular mobile games such as 'Pokemon Yellow' to wearable devices like the Apple Watch series 2 via a Game Boy emulator. An iOS developer named Gabriel O'Flaherty-Chan has released a new emulator called 'Giovanni' which allows gamers to play Pokemon Yellow on their smartwatches.

A full write-up of the latest port from Nintendo platform to Apple Watch via Game Boy emulator, besides a complete summary of the game itself, is now available on the developer's official site. The developer has admittedly worked on resolving various limitations with the in-game controls for the Apple Watch.

Here are the excerpts from the official gameplay description for Pokemon Yellow:

By allowing the user to pan on screen for directions, rotate the Digital Crown for up and down, and tap the screen for A, I was able to eliminate buttons until I was left with Select, Start, and B.

Touching the screen for movement isn't a great interaction, but being able to use the Crown worked out a lot better than originally anticipated. Scrolling through a list of options is basically what the Crown was made for, and if the framerate was even slightly higher, the interaction could almost be better than a hardware D-pad.
